Larry Akers

Geometric Sculpture and Digital Art

Larry Akers is a constructive sculptor and 2D artist living in Austin. His lifelong career in advanced computer science gave him an affinity for pattern that infuses his artwork. Through various styles and media, his primary focus is construction of pieces that exhibit interacting patterns, often utilizing moire effects. By juxtaposing geometrically interesting, semi-transparent layers over patterned backdrops, his constructions generate complex, fluidly shifting imagery that is elaborately animated by the viewer movements. His 2D work is also based on layered patterns and dynamic color interactions.

Larry's many exhibitions include solo shows at the Museum of Geometric and MADI Art in Dallas, Hopscotch in San Antonio, and the Dougherty Arts Center in Austin. His permanent installation of the "Moire Immersion Corridor" enlivens the second floor of The Thinkery children's science museum in Austin. Larry is a also prominent parks, transit, and community advocate in Austin. He loves his wife of 33 years and their son, most of the people he knows, dogs, music, water, and fresh fruit.
