I love the process of transforming unformed clay into a functional object. There is opportunity for endless refinement in how I move to shape the clay, and, at the end of the process, how the piece is comfortable to hold and use. The 3-dimensional piece also becomes a canvas for texture, color and design exploration. This is exemplified in my recent bird series, which are hand painted on wheel-thrown porcelain mugs or larger stoneware vessels. I feel renewed enthusiasm for art making after drifting away from it since studying fine art, with an emphasis in sculpture, at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (BFA) and Virginia Commonwealth (MFA
